Reading Your Natal Chart: A Beginner's Roadmap

Your natal chart might look complicated at first - a wheel filled with symbols, lines, and numbers. But once you understand the basic components, it becomes much easier to interpret.

Step 1: Identify the Four Main Components

Planets (What)

Planets represent different parts of your personality and life:

  • ☉ Sun: Core identity, ego, life force
  • ☽ Moon: Emotions, instincts, inner self
  • ☿ Mercury: Communication, thinking, learning
  • ♀ Venus: Love, beauty, values, money
  • ♂ Mars: Action, energy, desire, anger
  • ♃ Jupiter: Expansion, luck, wisdom, growth
  • ♄ Saturn: Discipline, limits, lessons, responsibility
  • ♅ Uranus: Change, rebellion, innovation
  • ♆ Neptune: Dreams, spirituality, illusion
  • ♇ Pluto: Transformation, power, rebirth

Signs (How)

The 12 zodiac signs describe HOW each planet expresses itself:

  • Aries: Direct, bold, impulsive
  • Taurus: Steady, sensual, stubborn
  • Gemini: Curious, versatile, communicative
  • Cancer: Nurturing, emotional, protective
  • Leo: Confident, creative, dramatic
  • Virgo: Analytical, helpful, perfectionist
  • Libra: Diplomatic, harmonious, indecisive
  • Scorpio: Intense, transformative, secretive
  • Sagittarius: Adventurous, philosophical, optimistic
  • Capricorn: Ambitious, disciplined, traditional
  • Aquarius: Innovative, independent, humanitarian
  • Pisces: Compassionate, intuitive, dreamy

Houses (Where)

The 12 houses represent different life areas WHERE planetary energies manifest:

  • 1st House: Self, appearance, first impressions
  • 2nd House: Money, possessions, values
  • 3rd House: Communication, siblings, learning
  • 4th House: Home, family, roots
  • 5th House: Creativity, romance, children
  • 6th House: Health, work, daily routines
  • 7th House: Partnerships, marriage
  • 8th House: Transformation, shared resources, intimacy
  • 9th House: Travel, philosophy, higher education
  • 10th House: Career, public image, ambition
  • 11th House: Friends, groups, hopes
  • 12th House: Spirituality, secrets, unconscious

Aspects (Why)

Aspects are angles between planets that show how they interact:

  • Conjunction (0°): Planets merge energies
  • Sextile (60°): Harmonious, opportunities
  • Square (90°): Tension, challenges, growth
  • Trine (120°): Easy flow, natural talents
  • Opposition (180°): Polarity, awareness, balance

Step 2: Start With Your Big Three

Before diving deep, understand your foundational placements:

  1. Find your Sun sign and house
  2. Find your Moon sign and house
  3. Find your Rising sign (always in the 1st house)

Step 3: Interpret Each Planet

Use this formula for each planet:

[Planet] in [Sign] in [House]

Example: "Venus in Pisces in the 7th House"

  • Venus = Love and relationships
  • in Pisces = Romantic, compassionate, idealistic
  • in 7th House = Partnerships are a major life focus

Interpretation: You seek deep, spiritual connections in relationships and may idealize partners.

Step 4: Look for Patterns

  • Element dominance: Are you mostly Fire, Earth, Air, or Water?
  • Mode dominance: Cardinal (initiator), Fixed (stable), or Mutable (adaptable)?
  • Hemisphere emphasis: Top (public), Bottom (private), Left (self), Right (others)?

Step 5: Study Major Aspects

Focus on aspects to your Sun, Moon, and Rising first. Then expand to Venus and Mars.
